Meg Ryan

Meg Ryan was born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra in Fairfield, Connecticut, to Susan (Duggan), she was an English teacher and one-time actress and Harry Hyra, a math teacher. Ruthenian as well as Polish, Irish, German and German heritage. "Hyra" Her maternal grandmother's maiden name, is Ruthenian. Meg graduated from Bethel High School, Bethel in May 1979. Meg relocated to New York City and studied journalism at New York University. Meg Ryan, her new name, entered acting to make extra money while she was completing her studies. In the year 1981, she had her big screen debut with a brief appearance as Candice Bergen's daughter in George Cukor's final film Rich and Famous (1981). She was cast in the character of Betsy in the TV soap as the World Turns (1956) after she tried out. She was part of the cast from 1982 to 1984. Meg was also participant in the television show One of the Boys (1982) but it was swiftly removed. In 1984, she moved to Hollywood, and was offered a position with the western-themed television series Wildside (1985). Meg was in a small part in Top Gun (1986), and was later cast in Steven Spielberg's Innerspace (1987), in which she was starring alongside Dennis Quaid. She was again in the same role with Dennis Quaid in the remake of D.O.A. (1988) and then got married on Saint Valentine's Day 1991. In 1989, Meg appeared in When Harry Met Sally... (1989) and the scene at the restaurant was a hit. Meg was nominated for the Golden Globe as well as the BAFTA. In 1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) and this time she played three roles as DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. She also appeared in of the hugely successful Sleepless in Seattle (1993) which received nominations for the Golden Globe. In 1994, Meg decided to act in a different way when she appeared as the wife of an alcoholic and mother in When a Man Loves a Woman (1994). Meg returned to being "cute" after that with I.Q. (1994) and French Kiss (1995). People Magazine voted Meg as one of the top 50 most beautiful people on the planet 1994.
